Coney Island Fries

The best thing about this recipe is that it is easy and versatile! You can start by adding the tasty Coney Island sauce to a hot dog and turn it into a chili dog by adding cooked, diced tomatoes and kidney beans.

Not a fan of hot dogs? No problem! Enjoy the chili plain or add it to frozen French fries.

For the Coney Island Sauce

  • 2 Tbsp. oil
  • 2 yellow onions, peeled and medium diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 2 lbs. Heinen’s CARE Certified ground beef
  • 1 ½ tsp. each of chili powder, ground cumin and celery seed
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. yellow mustard, plus more for garnish
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup water
  • Hot dogs
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Hot dog buns
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Chili

  • Coney Island sauce (see above)
  • 15 oz. can diced tomatoes and juice
  • 15 oz. can dark kidney beans
  • Chili powder and cumin, to taste
  • Warmed French fries
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Olives
  • Green onions


  1. For they Coney Island sauce, add the oil to a medium-size pot over medium heat and cook the onions and garlic until caramelized, about 15 minutes.
  2. Add the ground beef and cook until it is cooked through, about 10 minutes.
  3. Mix in the chili powder, cumin, celery seed, sugar, mustard, ketchup, salt and pepper until combined and cook for 5-10 minutes on low heat.
  4. Serve the Coney Island sauce over warmed hot dogs in buns and garnish with shredded cheddar cheese, mustard and onions.
  5. If turning the Coney Island sauce into chili, add the tomatoes, beans, chili powder and cumin to the Coney Island sauce and cook for another 5-10 minutes.
  6. Serve the chili over hotdogs or warmed French fries and garnish with cheese, olives and green onions.
