This Classic Patty Melt brings all the cheesy, savory, buttery goodness of a diner-style patty melt right to your dinner table.

First, Heinen’s premium CARE Certified ground beef is cooked to juicy perfection, then nestled between toasted rye bread and topped with melty American cheese. While traditional patty melts might stop there, this one gets an extra kick from a generous layer of Thousand Island dressing for a sweet and tangy twist.

This melt is simple to make and comes together in just 30 minutes. It’s perfect for a weeknight or weekend, and it holds up well for leftovers the next day.

You can make this recipe inside on the stove or outside on a flat-top grill. Either way, be sure to make extra because your dinnertime crew will be asking for seconds.

Cutting board with steak & burger seasoning, Italian seasoning and Heinen's 85% lean ground beef.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Two Brother’s steak and burger seasoning saves you time. There’s nothing more time consuming than rummaging through your spice cabinet trying to find everything you need to season burgers and measuring them out for the perfect blend. Two Brothers Fan Favorite seasoning blends make seasoning simple, convenient, and, of course, delicious. For this recipe, simply mix the seasoning into ground beef, and you’ll have perfectly seasoned burgers.
  • It’s perfect for a weeknight dinner or an outdoor cookout. The great thing about patty melts is that they can be cooked inside on a skillet or outside on a flat-top grill. We recommend the flat-top if you’re feeding a bigger crowd, but no matter how you cook them, these melts will come out cheesy and delicious!
  • The Thousand Island dressing adds an added layer of flavor. Dolloped or spread, the Thousand Island dressing is a sweet and tangy addition to these patty melts that pull all the flavors together. While it’s not found on a traditional patty melt, once you try it this way, you’ll be asking for a side of Thousand Island the next time you order one at a restaurant!

Ingredients

  • Heinen's rye bread, sliced
  • 6 Tbsp. Heinen's butter, softened
  • 1 lb. Heinen's CARE Certified 85/15 ground beef
  • 1 tsp. Heinen's olive oil, for mixing the beef in the bowl
  • 1/2 Tbsp. Heinen's Italian seasoning
  • 1 Tbsp. Two Brother's steak & burger seasoning
  • 4 slices Heinen's sharp cheddar cheese
  • 4 slices Heinen's provolone cheese
  • Thousand Island dressing, to taste
  • 2 Tbsp. chives, minced

Instructions

  1. Butter one side of each slice of bread and set aside.
  2. In a bowl, mix the ground beef with the seasonings. Drizzle in the olive oil and mix gently. Form the mixture into patties, about 1/4-inch thick, making them slightly larger than the bread.
  3. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 2-3 minutes on each side, then reduce the heat to low and cook for 5 more minutes, ensuring the center is fully cooked.
  4. While the patties cook, heat a second skillet on medium-low and place the bread slices (butter-side down). Add 2 slices of cheddar cheese on one slice and 2 slices of provolone on the other. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side until lightly toasted, covering the skillet to melt the cheese.
  5. To assemble the melt, place a patty on the cheddar side, top with the Thousand Island dressing, and sprinkle with chives. Place the provolone side of the bread on top. Press down and broil for 1-2 minutes if desired, or serve once the cheese is melted.

Two rye-bread sandwiches cut in half with ground beef patties, provolone and cheddar cheese and Thousand Island dressing.
