It’s the time of year for holiday cheer and hot cocoa bombs.

These chocolate treats started trending during the 2020 holiday season and they always seemed so intimidating, but once I gave them a try I realized that they’re extremely fun and easy to make, especially if you use a quality silicone mold. I found a great one on Amazon, but you can also easily find them at your local craft store. It’s important that the mold is thin and flexible so the chocolate can pop out easily.

Hot Cocoa Bombs

Grab the kids and become chocolatiers this holiday season. Whether you enjoy these as a family, or gift them to friends, neighbors and teachers, these hot cocoa bombs are sure to sweeten any holiday celebration!

For the Hot Cocoa Bombs

  • 5 oz. Heinen’s 70% dark chocolate chips (About half of the bag)
  • Hot cocoa mix
  • Festive sprinkles
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Holiday M&M’s

Kitchen Equipment

  • 2 silicone molds, 6 indents per mold
  • Medium-size glass bowl
  • Small skillet
  • Spoon

  1. Add the dark chocolate chips to a microwave-safe glass bowl. Microwave for 2 minutes, pausing every 30-40 seconds to stir. Remove from the microwave when fully melted.
  2. Add a heaping spoonful of melted chocolate to each indent on the molds. Tilt the molds around until the chocolate fully coats all sides of each indent. It is okay if some chocolate spills over the side.
  3. Place the filled molds in the fridge to set for about 20 minutes.
  4. While the molds are firming, add the fillings to small cups near the stovetop and warm a small skillet over low heat.
  5. Once firm, carefully pull the molds away from the chocolate. Push gently on the bottoms of the molds, and the half spheres of chocolate will pop out. Trim off any excess chocolate from the sides of the molds.
  6. Add a spoonful of cocoa mix, mini marshmallows, sprinkles and any additional fillings to half of the chocolate spheres, being careful not to overfill.
  7. One at a time, place the unfilled chocolate spheres edge-side-down in the hot skillet and twist it around until the chocolate melts slightly.
  8. Gently press a melted half sphere with a topping-filled half sphere to form a full cocoa bomb, using your fingers to smooth the melted chocolate. Repeat until all of the chocolate spheres have been used.
  9. Drizzle more melted chocolate over the top of each cocoa bomb and top with festive sprinkles.
  10. To serve, place a little more cocoa mix in the bottom of a mug, followed by a cocoa bomb. Pour hot milk over top and watch the cocoa bomb melt and expose all of the delicious fillings.

Note: These would make great holiday gifts for friends and family, or even host/hostesses. Simply fill a mug of your choice with a little cocoa mix and a cocoa bomb, wrap it with cellophane and festive ribbon and gift away!

Heinen's Grocery Store

By Heinen's Grocery Store

In 1929, Joe Heinen opened the doors of a small butcher shop on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio, aiming to establish himself as the city’s purveyor of quality meats. As customers came into Heinen’s new shop for their meat purchases, they began asking him to carry groceries as well. Joe added homemade peanut butter, pickles and donuts and by 1933, business had grown enough to include a line of produce and canned goods. Heinen’s Grocery Store was born.
