Who could ever say no to a big bowl of queso?

If you’re planning a taco night or attending a game day watch party or tailgate, Philly Cheesesteak Queso is a must-make appetizer that combines all the best qualities of a classic American sandwich with one of the most beloved Mexican restaurant-style dips!

Creamy, savory, and thick enough for a hearty tortilla chip, this cheesy dip comes together in 30 minutes using two key time-saving ingredients: Heinen’s CARE Certified shaved sirloin steak and Barrio queso blanco. Combined with fresh peppers and onions and served warm, this dip is a true melting pot of flavor that is guaranteed to win at meal time or game time.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Heinen’s CARE Certified shaved sirloin steak is a high-quality shortcut: All Heinen’s beef is CARE Certified, which means it comes from a single family farm that raises beef to the highest standards of quality and animal welfare. In addition, Heinen’s shaved sirloin steak is pre-shaved at Heinen’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Warrensville Heights, OH and sold in vacuum-sealed packaging. What does this mean for you? It means that you can enjoy a longer shelf life and skip the tedious step of slicing and dicing raw meat.
  • Heinen’s carries Barrio queso blanco. If you’re a Cleveland native, you’ve likely visited a Barrio restaurant location for their infamous tacos, guacamole, queso, and salsa! We’ve partnered with Barrio to offer their delicious queso blanco in our Deli Department, so you can enjoy this delicious local favorite from the comfort of home. Not a fan of queso? We also carry Barrio salsa in our Grocery aisles.
  • It offers big flavor from simple seasonings. This recipe calls for Two Brothers steak and burger seasoning, which just so happens to be a Heinen’s Fan Favorite product! Created by Heinen’s chefs to enhance nearly any beef-based dish, this delicious seasoning eliminates the need for you to measure and mix your own spice blend, but the flavor does not suffer!
  • You don’t have to chop the veggies yourself. While this recipe calls for chopping peppers and onions by hand, you can skip this step. If you’re short on time or simply not a fan of chopping, Heinen’s recipe ready fajita peppers are a great shortcut. Pre-packaged in the Produce Department with green and red bell peppers and red onions, all you have to do is open the package and cook according to the instructions below.

Ingredients

  • 1 package of Heinen’s CARE Certified shaved sirloin steak
  • 2 containers of Barrio queso blanco
  • Red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • Green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • Yellow bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • Yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 Tbsp. Heinen’s steak and burger seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp. Heinen’s crushed red chili pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. Heinen’s cayenne pepper
  • Heinen’s extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling
  • Heinen’s tortilla chips

Instructions

  1. Heat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Pat the shaved sirloin steak with paper towels until it is dry. Set aside.
  2. Once the skillet is hot, add a little olive oil followed by the sliced peppers and onion. Allow the vegetables to cook for about 7 minutes, or until wilted, then add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 3-5 minutes. Transfer this mixture to a bowl and set aside.
  3. Add the sirloin steak to the same skillet and sprinkle half of the steak and burger seasoning, crushed red chili pepper, and cayenne pepper on top. Cook for a couple of minutes then flip the steak and add the rest of the seasonings. Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the steak is cooked to your liking. Remove from the skillet and slice the steak into small pieces. Set aside.
  4. Pour the queso into a clean nonstick skillet. Add the vegetables and chopped steak. If desired, reserve some of the steak and vegetables for topping.
  5. Place the skillet over low heat for 5 minutes until the dip is warm, then transfer to a large serving bowl.
  6. Drizzle olive oil over the top and add any reserved steak and vegetables.
  7. Serve warm with tortilla chips.
