If you have access to the internet, you’ve likely seen, or at least heard, of the latest food trend going viral around the globe: the butter board! It’s a spin on the ever-popular charcuterie board that features smeared butter on a serving board surrounded by all kinds of delicious “dippables,” like breads and crackers.

The great thing about viral food trends is that they give anyone the inspiration they need to recreate the dish at home and add their own spin, which is exactly what I did with this Sweet Brunch Butter Bowl. While the butter boards you’ve seen online are most often served on a flat wooden board, feel free to use any serving platter you have on hand. I opted for a shallow bowl/rimmed plate so that the dippers can be arranged around the butter without spilling off.

Softened butter is then smeared and seasoned with orange zest, cinnamon, brown sugar and honey to create a sweet flavor profile that pairs well with crusty bread, breakfast sausage and, of course, waffles! Because what’s brunch without waffles?

Serve this sweet spin on the fan-famous butter board at your next weekend brunch and feel free to swap out the dippers with anything your crew craves!

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks Heinen’s butter, softened overnight
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 tsp. Heinen’s ground cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp. Heinen’s brown sugar
  • Drizzle of Heinen’s honey
  • Sea salt
  • Heinen’s CARE Certified breakfast sausage or bacon
  • Heinen’s frozen waffles, quartered and toasted
  • Heinen’s artisan bread, cut into strips and toasted
  • Assorted nuts
  • Dried fruit, such as raisins or apricots
  • Heinen’s pure organic maple syrup, for dipping
  • Seasonal fruit of choice

Instructions

  1. Smear the Butter. Using a butter spreader/knife, smear the butter all over the tray or dish. This step does not have to be perfect, but it’s important that the butter is soft and spreadable.
  2. Flavor the Butter. Sprinkle on the orange zest, then add the cinnamon and brown sugar on top. Add a drizzle of honey and finish with a pinch of sea salt to bring out the sweet flavor.
  3. Choose the Dippers. The options are endless, but for brunch, use toasted frozen waffles that are cut into quarters, toasted artisan bread that is cut into strips to resemble French toast, breakfast sausage, nuts, dried fruit and any fresh fruit that is in season. Serve with a side of warm maple syrup for the waffles. Mini pancakes, French toast stick or cinnamon rolls would be delicious, too!
