An Exceptional Wine from Portugal
In our never-ending thirst for discovering new, unique and delicious wines, we traveled to an emerging wine region that we are excited to introduce to our customers: the Alentejo region of Portugal. These wines are the darlings of Lisbon cafes and restaurants, and when you taste the wine we created during our visit, you’ll understand our excitement!
Last September, members of Heinen’s wine team traveled to the Herdade do Rocim Winery to witness firsthand the magic that is created in the Alentejo region. To many people, Portuguese wines are either completely unknown, or at best, defined by the famous wines of Porto, or Port wine. Our mission was to not only taste and learn about Alentejo wines, but to find an exciting wine to bring back to our customers. We were able to do just that by working with the experts at Herdade do Rocim to craft a wine from various Alentejo region blends. In the process, we created a delicious wine in that is, in a word, magical.
Native Portuguese grape varietals Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez and Touriga Nacional join forces to create a wine that is redolent of red fruit aromas and flavors. Rich mocha notes and a juicy plum essence are layered on a smooth and imminently drinkable frame. Simply put, this is a joyful wine that all red wine drinkers will find both fascinating and tasty.
While a wine like this is an extraordinarily versatile partner for many foods, our favorite pairings are spicy pork dishes or grilled chicken thighs. With only 100 cases coming to our stores from the Alentejo region, we recommend that you grab a bottle or two while we have it.
