We Know Our Sources: Wild Alaska Copper River Sockeye Salmon

Alaska is home to one of the largest and healthiest wild salmon populations in the world which makes the annual Copper River Sockeye salmon season highly anticipated by seafood lovers.

Heinen’s longstanding relationship with Alaskan partner, Favco allows real-time communication between teams to have fresh catches to Heinen’s stores overnight through Heinen’s Direct Overnight Seafood Program.

Harvested from icy-cold Alaskan waters beginning in late May and spanning through September, Sockeye salmon catches are transported to processing facilities located in the small, coastal fishing communities who play a vital role in the fishing industry. To guarantee sustainable harvesting and protect the natural habitat, the state of Alaska has implemented strict practices such as regulating fishing seasons and catch limits. These values are important as we are focused on responsibly sourcing the freshest, highest-quality seafood for our customers.

Sockeye salmon is known for its vibrant red hue and rich flavor. It contains a higher oil content compared to other varieties which contributes to its buttery texture and versatility. By Heinen's Grocery Store

In 1929, Joe Heinen opened the doors of a small butcher shop on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio, aiming to establish himself as the city’s purveyor of quality meats. As customers came into Heinen’s new shop for their meat purchases, they began asking him to carry groceries as well. Joe added homemade peanut butter, pickles and donuts and by 1933, business had grown enough to include a line of produce and canned goods. Heinen’s Grocery Store was born.
